That’s SICSS in practice! 🚀🔍

February 2025

The project of Łukasz Szoszkiewicz, Zuzanna Kowalska, Joanna Walczak, and Martyna Osztynowicz is a great example of how computational social science can address important real-world challenges. Their database, designed to facilitate research and analysis of General Comments and Recommendations from ALL UN Treaty Bodies, demonstrates the power of interdisciplinary collaboration in making legal research more accessible and impactful.

We are incredibly proud of and inspired by the SICSS community, which continues to push the boundaries of innovation by bringing together experts from law, social sciences, and data science. SICSS is more than just a summer school—it’s a space where ideas turn into meaningful projects, and where collaboration fuels progress.

Stay tuned for more groundbreaking projects from the SICSS community—where innovation, collaboration, and computational social science come together to shape the future!

Neural Data: Questioning the limits of the personal data paradigm

January 2025

“If data is the “new oil”, then brain data may be its most precious layer”. A recent article explores the ethical and legal implications of collecting and analyzing neural data, emphasizing the need to reassess current data protection frameworks. The discussion highlights concerns about privacy, consent, and the potential misuse of such deeply personal information. As technology evolves, it's crucial to establish guidelines that safeguard individual rights while fostering innovation.

Engaging in this dialogue is essential to navigate the complexities of neural data responsibly.

Talking devices, data law and EU

December 2024

As our everyday devices become increasingly interconnected, the data they generate is transforming various sectors. A recent article highlights the European Union's efforts to regulate this data flow through initiatives like the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the Data Act. These regulations aim to balance innovation with individual rights, ensuring that as technology evolves, so do the protections for users.

Parental confirmation of a child’s consent to data processing

November 2024

A recent article titled "Parental Confirmation of a Child's Consent to Data Processing" delves into the complexities surrounding children's consent under data protection laws. The study examines the legal frameworks that require parental approval for processing minors' data, highlighting challenges in verifying such consent in digital environments. It emphasizes the need for clear guidelines to balance protecting children's privacy with enabling their participation in online activities. The article calls for developing robust mechanisms to ensure that parental consent is both informed and verifiable, safeguarding children's rights in the digital age.

Engaging in this dialogue is crucial to develop balanced policies that foster innovation while ensuring responsible data use.

Generation Z and online privacy: Understanding GDPR’s protection for young Internet users

October 2024

A recent article delves into the unique challenges Generation Z faces regarding online privacy. Despite being digital natives, many young users lack awareness of data protection measures, making them vulnerable to privacy infringements. The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) offers safeguards, but its effectiveness hinges on users' understanding and proactive engagement. Educating this generation about their digital rights is crucial to ensure their personal information remains secure.

Empowering young internet users with knowledge about GDPR can enhance their online safety.

Press publications and AI — journalism of the future

September 2024

As artificial intelligence continues to evolve, its integration into journalism is becoming increasingly significant. A recent article discusses the necessity for press publishers to receive compensation when their content is utilized to train AI models. This perspective emphasizes the importance of recognizing and valuing original journalistic work in the age of AI.

Balancing protection and privacy: The EU Legislature’s dilemma in the face of child sexual abuse regulation

August 2024

The European Union is grappling with the complex task of combating child sexual abuse while upholding individual privacy rights. Proposed measures, such as mandatory scanning of private communications by digital platforms, aim to detect and prevent abuse. However, these initiatives have sparked debates over potential infringements on privacy and the effectiveness of such surveillance methods. A recent article argues that while child protection is paramount, it's essential to ensure that measures do not compromise fundamental rights or lead to unwarranted mass surveillance.

Engaging in this dialogue is crucial to develop solutions that safeguard children without undermining personal freedoms.

Flows of information and data: the ocean of possibilities or ghost-nets of regulation?

July 2024

Information and data are among the most valuable digital resources today. A recent article invites discussion on the dilemmas the European Union faces in effectively regulating—or choosing not to regulate—these digital assets. The piece explores the balance between harnessing the vast possibilities that free data flows offer and the potential pitfalls of overregulation, which could stifle innovation and economic growth.

Engaging in this dialogue is crucial to develop balanced policies that foster innovation while ensuring responsible data use.

Empirical Studies in Law

There was an idea: to bring together a group of remarkable people to see if they could become something more — if they could build a community of lawyers eager to use empirical and computational methods in their scientific work.

This group exceeded expectations. They also discovered many social scientists who want to bridge the gap between law and data science. Now, they collaborate on amazing projects.

Yet, this Great Group remains committed to its roots, spreading the idea of applying computational methods not only in law but across all social sciences. They continue to seek out and connect the best minds in the international community.
